Presidential Scholarship: Research Combining Mathematics and Machine Learning

Andrii Makarchuk, a postgraduate student and assistant at the Department of Software Engineering in Energy of IATE, has received the President of Ukraine’s academic scholarship for the 2025/2026 academic year. The relevant order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine recognises students for outstanding scientific achievements and active research.

Andrii consciously chose to continue his academic path at KPI, selecting the university for postgraduate study because of its reputation as the country’s leading technical higher education institution. His interest in function-approximation methods began during his bachelor’s degree; over time, however, he sought not only theoretical results but also practical applications of mathematical models in real technical systems.

Today, his research interests include function-approximation methods and machine learning, in particular the use of algorithms to improve the functional resilience of information and multi-machine computing systems. His results include an algorithm that, under a limited budget, identifies the optimal configuration of machines for forming a network with maximum fault tolerance.

His further research is aimed at developing an integrated approach combining Fourier analysis, approximation theory and machine-learning methods. In the researcher’s view, this interdisciplinary synergy will substantially improve methods for designing information systems and other technical systems.

Andrii Makarchuk also emphasises the role of the university’s research environment in supporting the professional development of young researchers. He expressed his gratitude to his academic supervisor Oleh Volodymyrovych Barabash and the Head of the Department, Oleksandr Vasylovych Koval, for their support in his research and the opportunity to contribute to educating future specialists.

The researcher welcomes collaboration with students, colleagues and researchers from other institutions, convinced that broad communication is a driving force for new ideas and unexpected professional results.

Receiving the Presidential Scholarship is not only recognition of his achievements to date, but also an incentive for further research at the intersection of mathematical methods and intelligent algorithms.
