When preparing qualification papers, course-project reports, placement reports, laboratory reports and other academic documents, students should follow the applicable national standards for text documents and reports in science and technology.
The guidance below explains the institute’s published requirements. Check the current guidance for your programme and the instructions issued by your department or supervisor before submitting a paper.
Page format
Use the following page settings:
- A4 paper, 210 × 297 mm.
- Margins: top 2 cm, bottom 2 cm, left 2 cm and right 1 cm.
- Number pages consecutively throughout the document using Arabic numerals. Place the number at the top right without a full stop.
- Do not print page numbers on pages preceding the table of contents.
Main text
The main text is to be written in Ukrainian and formatted as follows:
- Times New Roman, 14 pt.
- 1.5-line spacing, with no spacing before or after paragraphs.
- A consistent first-line indent of 1.25 cm throughout the text.
- Justified text alignment.
Document structure
A document comprises chapters, sections and subsections, together with special elements: Abstract (where required, in Ukrainian and/or English), Contents, List of Symbols, Abbreviations and Terms (where required), Introduction, Conclusions and References. Apply the following rules:
- Chapters, sections and subsections must have headings.
- Centre chapter headings and headings of special elements. Use capital letters without a final full stop, underlining or bold type.
- Start section and subsection headings at the paragraph indent, using sentence case without a final full stop, underlining or bold type.
- Separate sentences in a multi-sentence heading with full stops.
- Leave two lines between a heading and the preceding or following text. Do not leave blank lines between consecutive headings.
- Begin each chapter and special structural element on a new page.
- Begin sections and subsections on the current page.
- Do not leave a section or subsection heading at the bottom of a page with only one line of text following it.
- Number chapters consecutively using Arabic numerals without a final full stop: 1, 2, 3, and so on.
- Number sections within each chapter using the chapter number and section number separated by a full stop, with no final stop: 1.1, 1.2, and so on.
- Number subsections within each section using the chapter, section and subsection numbers separated by full stops, with no final stop: 1.1.1, 1.1.2, and so on.
List of symbols, abbreviations and terms
List and explain non-standard abbreviations for terms that occur more than twice. In the main text, give the abbreviation in brackets after the term’s first occurrence.
Arrange abbreviations alphabetically, with Latin-script abbreviations before Cyrillic ones.
Omit this element if the document does not contain abbreviations.
Table of contents
Format the table of contents according to Annex B of DSTU 3008:2015 and your programme’s guidance.
Figures and tables
Apply the following requirements:
- Place figures immediately after the text in which they are first mentioned, or on the following page.
- Centre each figure caption below the figure. It comprises the word “Figure”, the number and a title separated by a dash. Number figures within each chapter: for example, “Figure 3.1 – Layout diagram” is the first figure in Chapter 3.
- Treat flowcharts as figures. The original institute guidance refers to GOST 19.701-90 on algorithm, program, data and system flowcharts; confirm the applicable notation and standard with your department.
- Place tables immediately after the text in which they are first mentioned, or on the following page.
- Place table titles above the table, left-aligned without a first-line indent. Use “Table”, the number and a title separated by a dash. Number tables within each chapter: for example, “Table 5.3 – Calculation results” is the third table in Chapter 5.
- When a table continues onto another page, repeat its header in each part. Column numbers may replace the header in later parts if the columns are numbered in the first part. Above each continuation, write “Continuation of Table…” with the table number, left-aligned without an indent.
- Leave one blank line above and below every figure and table.
Lists
Format lists as follows:
- Introduce a list with a colon.
- Use lowercase Ukrainian letters followed by a closing parenthesis for the first level of an ordered list.
- Use a hyphen for each item in an unordered list.
- For a second level in an ordered list, use Arabic numerals followed by a closing parenthesis. For example:
а) cell shape and size;
б) living cell contents:
1) cell parts;
2) non-living protoplast inclusions;
в) tissue formation;
- Indent first-level list items by 1.25 cm and second-level items by 2 cm, beginning the text with lowercase letters.
Equations
Apply the following requirements to equations:
- Centre equations immediately after the text in which they are mentioned.
- Leave one blank line above and below every equation.
- Number equations within each chapter using the chapter number and equation number separated by a full stop, in parentheses. For example, (1.3) is the third equation in Chapter 1.
- Do not insert equations as images.
References
The institute’s published guidance refers to DSTU GOST 7.1:2006 for bibliographic descriptions. KPI Library also provides guidance on DSTU 8302:2015 and international citation styles. Apply the standard required by your programme and department.
- Number references in the order in which they are first cited in the text.
- Use sources of scholarly value; the institute’s guidance excludes sources such as Wikipedia pages from the reference list.
Appendices
Place appendices after the reference list:
- Begin each appendix on a new page.
- Centre its title at the top in sentence case. Above it, centre “Appendix…” followed by the identifying uppercase letter.
- Identify appendices consecutively with uppercase Ukrainian letters, excluding Ґ, Є, З, І, Ї, Й, О, Ч and Ь: for example, Appendix А, Appendix Б, and so on.
Cross-references in the text
Refer to every figure, table and item in the reference list in the main text:
- Cite sources by their reference-list numbers in square brackets: for example, “in works [1–7]”.
- Identify chapters, sections, subsections, figures, tables, equations and appendices by number or letter. Examples include “in Chapter 4”, “see 2.1”, “under 3.3.1”, “in Figure 1.3”, “in Table 3.2”, “using Equation (3.1)”, “in Equations (1.23)–(1.25)” and “in Appendix Б”.
Program listings
Program listings are generally placed in a separate appendix.
The institute’s guidance permits Times New Roman 8 pt with single line spacing for program listings.
Formatting support
Obtain the template required for your paper from your department or supervisor. KPI Library provides examples of reference-list formatting.
