IATE researchers join discussion on modern cooling systems for nuclear power plants

The management of JSC «NNEGC «Energoatom», together with Yevhen Pysmennyi — professor and academic supervisor of the Department of Nuclear Power Engineering at the Educational and Research Institute of Nuclear and Thermal Energy of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute — discussed the prospects for introducing new types of heat exchanger surfaces in cooling systems for nuclear power units, particularly dry cooling towers.

Against the backdrop of global warming and falling river levels, dry cooling tower technology may offer an important solution: such systems consume virtually no water. Ukrainian researchers have already developed a unique heat exchanger tube design that makes cooling towers more compact and enables their manufacture in Ukraine.

One promising option is a combined system in which dry and evaporative cooling towers operate in parallel: the dry tower at moderate temperatures, with the evaporative tower brought online during periods of peak heat.
